Fellowships for Study in Québec, Summer 2014

These fellowships are open only to American citizens and only for summer study at the University of Laval in Québec City. All candidates must become members of the SPFFA at the time of their application. Courses are scheduled for about four weeks, from early May to early June and early July to early August. Fellowships are $4000.00 and are intended to cover tuition and a portion of students’ other expenses at Laval. Candidates must be either (a) undergraduate students, (b) graduate students in French or in a field requiring a sound knowledge of French, or (c) teachers of French in an American primary or secondary school. Each candidate must submit an application, including (1) an essay in French whose subject depends on the academic level of the candidate (see above in the French version), and (2) a check for $20 US, payable to the SPFFA, in order to insure membership in the Société.

1. Undergraduate Students. 

Applications must contain three copies of the following items: (a) a letter written in French in which candidates (i) state their reasons for applying, (ii) declare on their honor that their knowledge of French has not been acquired in a French speaking country (preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied in a Francophone country). Candidates are also required to provide a complete home address (including zip code), home and cell telephone numbers (including area codes), and an email address, as well as the address and phone number of their parents, in order to facilitate communication after the courses have been completed, (b) a letter of recommendation by a professor of French, (c) a complete original transcript, copy is not accepted. Candidates will be asked to write an essay, under the supervision of the professor recommending them, on one of the two topics included with this announcement. The essay is to be written in French in a period of time not exceeding three hours without any written or oral help whatsoever. Before submitting the essay to the SPFFA, the professor must countersign it to attest that the conditions mentioned above have been met. The professor is also asked to ascertain that candidates’ grades, particularly in French, have been satisfactory during the first part of the current academic year.

 (Pour freshman et sophomore)

2) Expliquez en détail pourquoi vous avez choisi le français, et en quoi cela peut affecter votre vie et votre future carrière.

(Pour junior et senior)

2. Graduate Students.

3. Teachers in an American primary or secondary school.

Applications must include a letter in French in which candidates explain in detail (500 words at least) the advantages for American teachers of a stay in a Francophone university in Québec, provide a complete home address (including zip code), home and cell telephone numbers (including area codes), and an e-mail address.

All candidates must agree in their application that, upon returning, they will submit to the SPFFA a report on their activities in Québec.
